Application Procudure
Our application process may seem different from that of other schools because of the emphasis we place on personal choice and responsibility. For instance, it is required that all prospective students visit the school for two to four days while school is in session. (This should include one All-School Council Meeting.) This visit will give the student sufficient first-hand knowledge of the school to be able to make an informed decision. The student's desire to attend is the primary admissions requirement. (In the summer, an interview with a staff member may take the place of the visit.)
A parent or guardian (preferably all adults involved in raising the child) must also meet with a staff member. It is essential that the parents/guardians understand fully what this school is about and how it operates so that they can fully support the student's choice to attend. For this reason The Tutorial School's statement of purpose must be carefully read. The parents' support is critical to the educational process. Students learn to take responsibility only when parents adopt a policy of non-interference. Parents must learn to trust their children to make their own decisions even if the parents do not agree with them. The parents/guardians also support the school financially through tuition payments. Are you willing to do all this? Consider carefully, as it will require a financial and emotional commitment on your part.
Once the interviews and the visits have been completed, the student has decided he or she wants to attend, and the parents/guardians have agreed to support the student and the school, then several forms are filled out: an application form, a medical consent form, an open campus form, and a tuition policy form. If you wish to make tuition payments in installments, an extended tuition contract must be signed. In addition, the prospective student will sign a list of the agreements that the community has updated over the years. All these forms must be signed and the first installment of the tuition paid before the student can attend The Tutorial School beyond the visit requirement. It is possible to further extend the visit only through a special arrangement and a per diem payment of .5% of the tuition. In any event, all payments count toward tuition, and admission is prorated from the first day of visiting.
