April  2018                                                                          Volume 26  Number 3

Birds are out singing, trees are beginning to bloom, and we have been able to spend more time outside. More hikes and trips to the park are taking place. Bird houses are being made, hummingbird feeders are going up, and students will soon be planting new trees in front of the school.

The 2018 IDEC (International Democratic Education Conference) will be held in conjunction with the APDEC (Asia-Pacific Democratic Education Conference) in Bangalore, India this upcoming November. We are very excited to be a part of this and to be able to take students with us. This is a great opportunity for them to meet others who attend schools like ours from other countries. Apart from India we may also go to Sri Lanka. One student is working hard to make this happen and help raise funds. She’s creating gifts for donors and organizing aspects of the trip.

In order to make this trip happen, there are a few things we are working on. One of them is a short video about our school, where we will interview students about what sets us apart and why they chose this style of education. Let us know if there is any issue with your child being either interviewed or in the background of this video. Please fill out the enclosed video release form.

We might have a camping trip this spring. The proposed dates would be Wednesday and Thursday, May 16th and 17th. Stay tuned!

May 19th is the annual Japanese Matsuri (Festival) held at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Once again, we will have a Tutorial School booth in which we will be selling Japanese items. Students do not need to pay admission if they are volunteering for us. The money we make during this festival will also be used toward the travel fund.

The Last day of school is May 24th and we will be having a parent pot luck to celebrate the year! It will be at 6:00pm on Thursday, May 24th. We will need someone to do a follow-up reminder, so if you owe us trade agreement please call us to get the contact information.

Full tuition for next year, which is based on the cost of running the school per student, will remain at $10,000 for the year. Financial aid is subsidized by the faculty who take a cut in pay so that students can be here. For the 2018 – 2019 school year, financial aid will be based on a sliding scale, such that families will pay 10% of family income (or 10% of family liquid assets if greater) up to $10,000. Of course, this can be adjusted if you have extenuating circumstances, but we will need proof of income. Please arrange a meeting with Moe before the end of the school year if you will require financial aid. Regardless, please fill out the Letter of Intent so we can start budgeting for next year and to ensure a spot for your child.

Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.
